How To Reduce The Strain Put On Children When They Head Off To Boarding School

You may be dreading leaving your child at a boarding school and you are not alone. parental ties are loosened a little bit all over the country as sons and daughters gain a little bit more independence. Its only natural to be a little worried, after all they may never have been away from home for more than a couple of nights before. Your child is likely to be worrying also though. They are going to a completely new place, meeting completely new people and they don’t have their mum or dad to look after them. Follow these pieces of advise to help everything go smoothly.

Maintain contact. In the early days it is vital that your son or daughter can contact you. Organise a specific time for phone calls and make sure you contact them until they tell you to stop bugging them. Children often don’t ask you to ring them and it’s much better for them to get fed up of you than long to hear your voice. Framlingham College set aside an hour every evening for such phone calls

Send food and gifts. Post them something nice, maybe a hamper, every month of so. This may be food or toys or cloths etc. It isn’t even that important what you send to them as it is more about the thought and the reminder you care. It will additionally help with their socialisation as your child would have the oppertunity to give out some of the stuff to friends. Always ask the school first however as some schools such as Eastbourne College do not allow gift parcels

Visit when invited. If there is a show going on or any sort of school event then get yourself along, no excuses.Taunton School run events that take place on the same day of every month and anyone that wants to come can. Making the effort to get along will mean that you wont cause you son or daughter to feel left out and of course they get to see more of you
